Hannah Tessler
Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Michigan

I am currently a postdoctoral research fellow in sociology at the University of Michigan working with Dr. Elizabeth A. Armstrong. Prior to this, I received my Ph.D. in sociology at Yale University. I also hold an M.A. in statistics and data science and M.Phil in sociology from Yale, and a B.A. in sociology from Hamilton College. 

My research and teaching interests lie in inequalities tied to gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, family, and education. I employ both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to examine the life course, with a focus on traditional markers in the transition to adulthood, such as union formation and higher education. I am currently working on a book project based on over 200 longitudinal qualitative interviews with single adults in the US. My research has been funded by an NSF/ASA Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant and a University of Michigan Population Dynamics and Health Program Pilot Project Seed Grant.

My work is published in peer-reviewed numerous academic journals including Demography, Sociology, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Sexualities, Journal of Family Issues, Journal of Family Theory and Review, Social Currents, Sociology Compass, The Journal of Higher Education, International Review of Education, American Journal of Criminal Justice, Journal of School Violence, Victims and Offenders, and Research in Social Stratification and Mobility.
